Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Main objective of the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is to provide the care and protection to the orphaned elephants found in the jungle. To simulate the natural environment for the Elephants the orphanage has a land area of 25 acres by the Maha Oya river.

In addition‚ Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage is a breeding place for the elephants where more than 20 elephant babies have born.

For all the elephants in the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage food is provided including bottle feeding for baby elephants under 3years of age. Also all the elephants are given the facility to visit the nearby river twice a day for nice bath and playing.

Daily Activities of the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage available for visitors during the open time 8.30am ? 5.30pm are as below.
8.30am ? Open for Visitors
9.15am ? Bottle Feeding
10.00am ? Herd Leaving to the River
12.00noon ? Return from the river
1.15pm ? Bottle Feeding
2.00pm ? Herd Leaving to the River
4.00pm ? Return from the River
5.00pm ? Bottle Feeding

Foreign: Adult Rs. 2‚000.00; Child Rs. 1‚000.00

Turn left at "Karadupana" junction in Colombo - Kandy road (after Kegalle) to Rambukkana Road. Travel 6km to reach Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage‚ on the Rambukkana Road.
