Although traditionally known as Thuparama its ancient name or builder is not known. This is the only monument among those in Polonnaruwa where the roof is well preserved. Structures of this type where the side walls and the roof are made of bricks without using wood are known as gedige. The ornamentation of the exterior walls shows the influence of South Indian architecture‚ vimana-panjara-kudu design. There are indications that there had been a giant seated Buddha image inside‚ but only the large seat now remains.
